An opening sequence in silhouette in which Bacall takes two drags and a shot of two cigarettes nestling together in an ashtray emphasise the sexuality of smoking. It is, however, more than an hour before we see a nose-and-mouth exhale from a lighting, with traces of lipstick left on her cigarette. There is a lovely three-part mouth-and-nose exhale in profile in a later scene.
