Signoret dangles an unlit cigarette as she talks, then lights up with an immediate drag and inhale. She drags again, with her cigarette between finger and thumb, exhaling through her nostrils. In a second scene, she lights up in bed with a double puff, then takes two subsequent drags, the second with a nasal exhale. Miles, in her screen debut, takes a puff off her boyfriend's cigarette.

The Big Sleep

An opening sequence in silhouette in which Bacall takes two drags and a shot of two cigarettes nestling together in an ashtray emphasise the sexuality of smoking. It is, however, more than an hour before we see a nose-and-mouth exhale from a lighting, with traces of lipstick left on her cigarette. There is a lovely three-part mouth-and-nose exhale in profile in a later scene.

An aged Elizabeth picks up her holder twice but does not drag. Sarah asks for a cigarette, but coughs as she lights it. She dances with a holder later, but does not drag.

The Servant

Wendy's cigarette droops from her lips as she lies sideways on a sofa. She later takes a drag with her back to camera, initially puffing out a thick cloud of uninhaled smoke and you think she didn't inhale any of it. But she did and, when it comes, her exhale is copious and well-lit. She also smokes in a couple of other scenes. Sarah lights a cigarette and leaves it dangling seductively from her lips, puffing occasionally. She takes another drag as Dirk Bogarde removes it and uninhaled smoke curls creamily from her mouth with the last vestiges apparently blown into his face.
