Biography (TMDB): | From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Lauren Bacall (born Betty Joan Perske; September 16, 1924 – August 12, 2014) was an American actress known for her distinctive husky voice and sultry looks. She began her career as a model. She first appeared as a leading lady in the Humphrey Bogart film To Have and Have Not (1944) and continued on in the film noir genre, with appearances in Bogart movies The Big Sleep (1946), Dark Passage (1947), and Key Largo (1948), as well as comedic roles in How to Marry a Millionaire (1953) with Marilyn Monroe and Designing Woman (1957) with Gregory Peck. Bacall worked on Broadway in musicals, earning Tony Awards for Applause in 1970 and Woman of the Year in 1981. Her performance in the movie The Mirror Has Two Faces (1996) earned her a Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award nomination. In 1999, Bacall was ranked 20th out of the 25 actresses on the AFI's 100 Years...100 Stars list by the American Film Institute. In 2009, she was selected by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to receive an Academy Honorary Award "in recognition of her central place in the Golden Age of motion pictures." Bacall died on August 12, 2014, at the age of 89. According to her grandson Jamie Bogart, the actress died after suffering from a stroke. |

Bright Leaf
smokingsides
Bacall expertly rolls a cigarette and lights it, exhaling initially through her mouth, then her nostrils. As the first machine-manufactured cigarettes roll off the production line, she lights up, inhales an enthusiastic double-pump, and exhales with a smile of sheer delight. She then double-pumps again, running her tongue over her lips in appreciation as she expels the smoke from her lungs. She knows her tobacco too: she asks for a cigarette, lights it from a candle, double-pumps, exhaling first from her mouth, then her nostrils, before rejecting it, with smoke still clinging to her breath, as being of poor quality. Very short scenes, but demonstrative of Bacall's personal love-affair with cigarettes. George takes three puffs on a cigar. |
Designing Woman
smokingsides
Bacall takes a half-hour or so to get started in this one, but once she does, it's nonstop. Something for everyone here; lots of lightups, two or three holder scenes, and plenty of thick exhales. If you're into talking exhales, there are a bunch, including one from the side that goes on for a good 10 seconds. |
How to Marry a Millionaire
smokingsides
What I love about Bacall is the way she inhales direct from her lightings with talk and nasal exhales. There are three such scenes in this (seven in total). She uses a holder in a dream sequence. Towards the end she drags with a long side-on exhale just before her intended wedding; she lights up again a couple of minutes later, having called it all off. |
The Big Sleep
smokingsides
An opening sequence in silhouette in which Bacall takes two drags and a shot of two cigarettes nestling together in an ashtray emphasise the sexuality of smoking. It is, however, more than an hour before we see a nose-and-mouth exhale from a lighting, with traces of lipstick left on her cigarette. There is a lovely three-part mouth-and-nose exhale in profile in a later scene. |
smokingsides
One inhale/exhale scene of Collins smoking which is from a short distance, so not too clear. |
The Cobweb
smokingsides
A confident drag and natural nasal exhale from Lewis, who also drags in another scene. Bacall is first glimpsed lighting up in the background with a couple of drags and exhales. Later, she accepts a cigarette, taps it on her hand, is lit, throws her head back and blows out some smoke, before taking a heavy second drag with a talk-exhale. This is followed by two further drags/exhales. Jergens holds in one scene. |
The Fan
smokingsides
0:14 - Takes cig from gold case and accepts light; partial exhale. 0:37 - Holds. Then a sideview as she accepts light for another all-white. 0:49 - Accepts light, exhales. Another exhale from behind. 0:59 - In nightgown, dangles as she looks for a match, then lights. 1:02 - Drag-exhale, stubout. 1:16 - On stage doing a number, a stupendous drag-exhale. The light accentuates the smoke as she continues to hold. |
smokingsides
Scene in ... promo featuring Barkin singing or talking into a microphone with smoke coming up from her hand. No direct picture shown. |
To Have and Have Not
smokingsides
In this, the film often credited with starting a million women smoking, the 19-year-old Bacall actually takes only four drags off her non-filter. But what drags! All from the initial lighting - deeply inhaled and thickly expelled. She blows out a match with one exhale. You can see why others were attracted to the habit. |
