Movies
Baby Face
smokingsides
Three scenes. The first is side-on and her cigarette waggles slightly between her lips as she speaks just prior to lighting up. In the second she lights up in blissful triumph after compromising her boss. In a final scene she holds her cigarette between her finger and thumb for two heavy drags in quick succession. |
Clash by Night
smokingsides
Around twenty drags in all in nine scenes. Triple drags for maximum delivery on lighting up, dangling, no-hands puffing, talk-exhales, far-reaching side-on exhales, two scenes in which she stubs out and lights another almost immediately, one in which she exhales straight into her partner's face, and a great role reversal where she places two cigarettes between her lips, lights them simultaneously, removes them together, inhaling her double dose of nicotine and exhaling before passing one to her partner. A great performance from a great smoker. |
East Side, West Side
smokingsides
In an early scene Ava accepts a cigarette in the street, but the lighting and exhale are filmed from the rear. Later on her cheeks sink in as she lights up, opens her mouth to send the smoke down, but then exhales almost immediately. Barbara lights up at one point, but her exhale, though very visible, is filmed from behind. Beverley inserts a cigarette between her lips as she awaits a light, but we have to wait a while before we see two cool, though thin, mouth- and-nose exhales. |
Jeopardy
smokingsides
This lady never disappoints! She accepts a cigarette in an open-topped car and takes her trademark multiple drags to ignite it. In the next scene, she lights with a talk-and-nasal exhale. A second drag is filmed from behind, but she turns as she inhales deeply and expels a thick cloud. She takes a third drag in mid-sentence, flicking her ash as she exhales thick jets from her nostrils. |
To Please a Lady
smokingsides
plays a hard-driving newspaper columnist shown smoking while watching a newsreel, in newspaper screening room, in opening minutes. Couple more scenes of her smoking, inhales and exhales, including scene of Clark Gable lighting cig for her in his mouth and passing it to her mouth. Maybe this was glamourous in 1950 but it has dated badly |
