Biography (TMDB): | Marie Magdalene "Marlene" Dietrich (27 December 1901 - 6 May 1992) was a German actress and singer. Dietrich remained popular throughout her long career by continually re-inventing herself. In 1920s Berlin, she acted on the stage and in silent films. Her performance as Lola-Lola in The Blue Angel, directed by Josef von Sternberg, brought her international fame and a contract with Paramount Pictures in the US. Hollywood films such as Shanghai Express and Desire capitalized on her glamour and exotic looks, cementing her stardom and making her one of the highest paid actresses of the era. Dietrich became a US citizen in 1937; during World War II, she was a high-profile front-line entertainer. Although she still made occasional films in the post-war years, Dietrich spent most of the 1950s through the 1970s touring the world as a successful show performer. In 1999, the American Film Institute named Dietrich the ninth greatest female star of all time. |

A Foreign Affair
smokingsides
A few scenes from Marlene, mostly bunched together starting about 1.5 hours in. She plays a cabaret singer (yet again) in postwar Berlin, and smokes onstage as part of her act (snatching a cig from between the lips of a male audience member is a favorite move) and offstage as well. At various times we see her holding, dragging, exhaling both inhaled and uninhaled smoke, dangling as she claps her hands in time to music, and lighting one cigarette from the end of another. A routinely terrific performance from a woman who rarely disappoints. Did not see the first half hour of the film, there might be more. |
smokingsides
smokes in one outdoors scene, with a lightup and visible exhale |
Angel
smokingsides
A big disappointment, considering time, setting, and actress. Just one scene with a distant lightup, the beginning of a couple of drags, some holding, and a bit of a talking exhale. |
smokingsides
Fast-forwarded through. If there were any smoking, and I don't think there was, it was very quick. |
Blaue Engel, Der
smokingsides
most of the women in the movie smoke, including Marlene Dietrich. The smoking is not especially attractive- short puffs with little inhaling- but there is one delicious scene where the besotted professor crawls on the floor, picking up cigarettes dropped by Dietrich's character, while she lights up and puffs away. |
Rancho Notorious
smokingsides
Only caught a few minutes of this movie, but about 50 minutes in she holds a cigarette, dangles and takes two drags, one very nice one with characteristic minimal inhale and big puff of an exhale. 10 minutes later a scene with her smoking a small cigar, then another in the next scene. Guess she smokes throughout. |

Dietrich is very classy and a real beauty. Plus, she definitely inhales. Her sexy style, the use of holders, a dangle scene, her blowing smoke into a guy's face, and the sheer volume of smoking scenes in general make this a must see |
Shanghai Express
smokingsides
[Wong] smoking constantly in it, and runs the whole gamut of smoking behavior: exhales from the mouth, through the nose, snuffing out cigarettes, holding a cigarette between thumb and index finger while flicking off the ash with the ring finger of the same hand... Wong's scenes are brief, almost cameos, and sometimes there's a bit of a wait in between them, but if you're fascinated by mysterious, exotically beautiful women smoking in a black and white, film noire-like atmosphere, it's well worth the wait. |
