Madeleine smokes frequently and competently, with lots of light-ups and inhales, though few good exhales. However, as in some of her other films, she doesn't seem to enjoy it. Perhaps this is intentional in her portrayal of a nervous unhappy divorced mother, but my guess would be that she doesn't smoke IRL, at least these days. She seems to approach each drag like an effort, an acting challenge that she's up to but not used to. Mischa Barton, on the other hand, playing her daughter, doesn't smoke cigarettes in the film but really throws herself into a brief scene in which she's getting stoned (and mind-controlled) on a large joint. The scene is mostly played at extremely fast speed, but if you slow it down, she seems to inhale and definitely plays with her smoke, receiving a shotgun from a guy, doing a kind of french inhale, exhaling large clouds at the camera, etc. Bijou Phillips, whose IRL story suggests that she could probably smoke rings around either of them, so to speak, continues to frustrate on film - the closest she gets to smoking that I could see - unless there's more in the wildly speeded-up frames - is handing the joint to Mischa and encouraging her to smoke. |
