| Overview (TMDB): | Rachel Singer is a former Mossad agent who tried to capture a notorious Nazi war criminal – the Surgeon of Birkenau – in a secret Israeli mission that ended with his death on the streets of East Berlin. Now, 30 years later, a man claiming to be the doctor has surfaced, and Rachel must return to Eastern Europe to uncover the truth. Chastain is offered a cigarette early in the film but declines. Later, primarily as a pretense to explain why her character is where she is, she bums a cigarette from someone, accepts a light, then takes at least one drag and exhales. Still later, she is seen holding and smoking during a brief party scene (with at least one inhale and exhale). Mirren's character (an older version of Chastain's) is established early on as being a regular smoker. She is shown with cigarette packs in hand, pulled from her purse, and/or set next to her at a table. Her daughter mentions her habit during conversation. Although I think she holds at some point, either lit or unlit, I don't think we actually ever see her in the act of either inhaling or exhaling. |
