In her first scene, the gorgeous, elegant blonde Sanda approaches the camera from a distance, striding slinkily like a model (which she was) on a catwalk, unfiltered cigarette dangling from the corner of her mouth. She emits a puff of uninhaled smoke as she walks, then stops at the entrance to a room, takes a drag and inhales, with the camera cutting away before the exhale. She has a very visible exhale, partially talked out, later in the scene. Later in a restaurant, she lights up just off the edge of the frame, but the camera then cuts to her in 3/4 profile as she nonchalantly exhales two long, thick streams through her nostrils. She and Sandrelli share a cig in another scene, with Sandrelli dragging and slowly blowing out an uninhaled stream. And smoking aside, this is one of the greatest, most powerful and beautifully shot films of all time. |
