Whalley gives a world-class performance. She has numerous inhales, snap inhales and exhales. The highlight is a scene where she's smoking while having sex. She's has great back-lighting in the scene and has several nose-mouth combo exhales and talk-exhales in the scene. Zabriskie has a well-filmed inhale and exhale, but she's old and unattractive.

The circular plot is interesting, and despite the fact that Fiorentino manages to NOT smoke, there are nice scenes with 3 other actresses: Grace 'file me under Z' Zabriskie, who does a distant yet prodigious nose exhale, Assumpta Serna (she lights up and her young son tells her it's a stupid habit), and the black actress Suzzanne Douglass. The latter scene could have been 10 times better if the cameraman had zoomed differently. Arrrgh!

Now, we're talking! This time Maedchen shows a couple of drags while Sheryl smokes throughout. There might be more female smoking in this movie, I can't remember for sure. There's a really cool scene where Sheryl lies on a bed, takes a phone call, and puts on her stockings while clutching her cigarette between her teeth. Sandra, as an older woman with a nicotine-scarred voice, dangles, then takes two heavy drags.
