| Biography (TMDB): | Bette Midler (born December 1, 1945) is an American singer, songwriter, actress, comedian, and film producer. Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, Midler began her professional career in several Off-Off-Broadway plays, prior to her engagements in Fiddler on the Roof and Salvation on Broadway in the late 1960s. She came to prominence in 1970 when she began singing in the Continental Baths, a local gay bathhouse where she managed to build up a core following. Since 1970, Midler has released 14 studio albums as a solo artist. Throughout her career, many of her songs became hits on the record charts, including her renditions of "The Rose", "Wind Beneath My Wings", "Do You Want to Dance", "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy", and "From a Distance". In a career spanning almost half a century, Midler has won three Grammy Awards, four Golden Globes, three Emmy Awards, and a Tony Award. She has sold over 30 million records worldwide, and has received four Gold, three Platinum, and three Multiplatinum albums by RIAA. Playing a chain smoker [Curtis] smokes in almost every scene she is in and at one point lights one cigarette from another. The smoking is not glamorous as she is showing some age here and has probably looked better when she was younger. No complaints about the quantity though with many inhale and exhale sequences and her style includes many snap inhales |

Both girls, who light up about 67 minutes into the movie, look about 11 or 12 years old. Leora (Stella) does not really exhale, plays with her cigarette and lighter, her friend takes one quick drag and exhales just as quickly. |

The Women

Russell smokes in three scenes with a faint talk-exhale in one of them. Shearer performs two close-up lightings, inhaling only from the second. Crawford picks up a smouldering cigarette from an ashtray, takes a drag, and talks for a few seconds before exhaling. In other scenes she taps her cigarette before lighting, and hooks her smoke down real deep in classic style while relaxing in a bubble bath. For me, though, Goddard steals the show with a cool lighting, but she spoils it by not inhaling. |

both share a joint about an hour into the movie. Visible drags from Meg Ryan, exhale cannot be seen due to the lighting. Midler takes a few drags and there are a couple of visible snap inhales, but the exhales are nothing to write home about. |
