Biography (TMDB): Rosalind Russell (June 4, 1907 – November 28, 1976) was an American actress of stage and screen, perhaps best known for her role as a fast-talking newspaper reporter in the Howard Hawks screwball comedy His Girl Friday, as well as the role of Mame Dennis in the film Auntie Mame. She won all 5 Golden Globes for which she was nominated, and was tied with Meryl Streep for wins until 2007 when Streep was awarded a sixth. Russell won a Tony Award in 1953 for Best Performance by an Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of Ruth in the Broadway show Wonderful Town (a musical based the film My Sister Eileen, in which she also starred). Russell was known for playing character roles, exceptionally wealthy, dignified ladylike women. She had a wide career span from the 1930s to the 1970s and attributed her long career to the fact that, although usually playing classy and glamorous roles, she never became a sex symbol, not being famous for her looks. Movies
Auntie Mame
smokingsides
Five scenes with a ridiculously long holder, but only a single drag, which is not inhaled
China Seas
smokingsides
Three scenes in which Harlow holds, two others where she asks for a cigarette but does not light. A single drag from Russell - she opens her mouth quite wide to blow some of her smoke away unabsorbed, but inhales/exhales the rest properly
Flight for Freedom
smokingsides
Five lightings plus three drags, and a couple of holding scenes. Though her smoke is quite copious and visible, she seldom appears to inhale.
Four's a Crowd
smokingsides
Rosalind lights a cigarette from her combined case and lighter, part-releasing before inhaling and then talk-exhaling. An editing error in a later scene means that we see her take out a cigarette - the next moment it is already lit. Olivia takes a drag in a beach scene, but doesn't seem to inhale to any depth.
His Girl Friday
smokingsides
smokes in 4 scenes in the first 35 minutes of the film. No deep drags, but on almost every puff she blows out a quick cloud of smoke the size of a volleyball, then 2 seconds later she exhales a medium length stream of smoke, she does inhale.
Never Wave at a WAC
smokingsides
several scenes, including one during a physical examination
Night Must Fall
smokingsides
She looks like a school-marm with glasses and a cardigan sweater. (about 40:00) Smoking while playing cards with her mother, who twice coughs and waves the smoke away from her face. (about 1:05:00) Accepts a light from Robert Young.
The Velvet Touch
smokingsides
she smokes throughout this movie, usually with gloves and a holder. A couple of nice scenes as she's on her way to and then at a party, very elegantly dressed.
The Women
smokingsides
Russell smokes in three scenes with a faint talk-exhale in one of them. Shearer performs two close-up lightings, inhaling only from the second. Crawford picks up a smouldering cigarette from an ashtray, takes a drag, and talks for a few seconds before exhaling. In other scenes she taps her cigarette before lighting, and hooks her smoke down real deep in classic style while relaxing in a bubble bath. For me, though, Goddard steals the show with a cool lighting, but she spoils it by not inhaling.
smokingsides
both share a joint about an hour into the movie. Visible drags from Meg Ryan, exhale cannot be seen due to the lighting. Midler takes a few drags and there are a couple of visible snap inhales, but the exhales are nothing to write home about.
They Met in Bombay
smokingsides
two mediocre scenes
