| Biography (TMDB): | Maria Elena "Lina" Romay (January 16, 1919 - December 17, 2010) was a Mexican-American actress and singer. She was born in 1919 in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of Porfirio Romay, then-attache to the Mexican Consulate in Los Angeles. She appeared in both photoreal and live-action form in the Droopy cartoon "Senor Droopy" (1949). Romay performed for a time with Xavier Cugat before eventually retiring. She was featured on Cugat Rumba Revue on NBC radio in the early 1940s. Along with Cugat and his orchestra, she appeared in the films You Were Never Lovelier (1942) and Bathing Beauty (1944). Prior to singing with Cugat, she had sung with Horace Heidt's orchestra, when she was billed as Josette, a Frenchwoman. She was married to John Lawrence Adams and later was the third wife of Jay Gould III (son of Jay Gould II), whom she married on 30 June 1953. In this Jess Franco directed women's prison film, there's lots of smoking by two very attractive (and frequently nude) young women. Two minutes into the film, beautiful Spanish actress Lina Romay has a close-up inhale, but no exhale. 14 minutes in, she lights up and has 2 or 3 inhale-exhales, but unfortunately, they are medium shots and not as close as I would have liked. The third scene (and the best one) occurs 18 minutes in. Romay and cute blonde Martine Stedil light up outside and each have 5 or 6 well-lit exhales. Another female prisoner takes a couple of puffs, too. 21 minutes in, Stedil takes a puff in the bedroom and then just holds the rest of the scene, but she's totally naked so it's worth checking out. 28 minutes in, Romay has another outdoor lightup and two exhales, the second one [is] very nice in close up, and then inhales before the director cuts away. 33 minutes in, Romay and Martine light up and share a cigarette in their jail cell with several inhale-exhales, and even though it's somewhat dark and hard to see the smoke, both women are fully naked throughout. 49 minutes in, in another dimly lit scene, Stedil lights up and has 3 inhale-exhales. |

51 minutes into the film, one light up and exhale in medium shot. Next, in close up, one quick exhale, followed by two drags, but no exhales shown. One scene with her later in the film from far away, holds and takes a couple drags, hard to see anything. 29 minutes in, two unknown naked women are talking in prison. One takes a puff, holds the smoke in her mouth for a few seconds, then blows out a decent exhale and holds it to the other woman's mouth so she can have a drag. |

This movie is hard to find, and not really worth seeking out for the smoking unless you're a big fan of Romay. An unknown naked prisoner inhales in close up and blows out a nice exhale before handing the cigarette off to [Romay]. She takes 2 or 3 deep inhales but they're in long shot and the smoke is hard to see. At the conclusion of the scene, the director zooms into a close up on Romay as she inhales, but the scene cuts away before the exhale. Frustrating. |

As is normal in a Jess Franco movie, all the women smoke and often in the nude, but there's very little to see this time. Romay has 2 smoking scenes in a club and another one in the bedroom (while nude) with 3 or 4 inhales and no visible exhales. Stedil takes a drag and has a decent exhale, although the lighting is a bit dark. Moser lights up (while nude) and the camera pans away as she exhales. That's it. Barely worth watching. Romay has a good early scene with several drags and exhales but isn't particularly attractive. Parent is beautiful and has a decent scene later on, with at least one good drag but not much if any exhale. Best is a DVD extra in which we see Parent's scene from a different angle, which makes visible two terrific, lengthy, nostril exhales with thick smoke. |
