Biography (TMDB): | Michelle Ingrid Williams (born September 9, 1980) is an American actress. Known primarily for starring in small-scale independent films with dark or tragic themes, she has received various accolades, including two Golden Globe Awards and a Primetime Emmy Award, in addition to nominations for five Academy Awards and a Tony Award. Williams, a daughter of politician and trader Larry R. Williams, began her career with television guest appearances and made her film debut in the family film Lassie in 1994. She gained emancipation from her parents at age fifteen, and soon achieved recognition for her leading role in the teen drama television series Dawson's Creek (1998–2003). This was followed by low-profile films, before having her breakthrough with the drama film Brokeback Mountain (2005). Williams went on to receive critical acclaim for playing emotionally troubled women coping with loss or loneliness in the independent dramas Wendy and Lucy (2008), Blue Valentine (2010), and Manchester by the Sea (2016). She won two Golden Globes for portraying Marilyn Monroe in the drama My Week with Marilyn (2011) and Gwen Verdon in the miniseries Fosse/Verdon (2019), in addition to a Primetime Emmy Award for the latter. Her highest-grossing releases came with the thriller Shutter Island (2010), the fantasy film Oz the Great and Powerful (2013), the musical The Greatest Showman (2017), and the superhero films Venom (2018) and Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021). Williams has also led major studio films, such as Ridley Scott's crime thriller All the Money in the World (2017) and Steven Spielberg's drama The Fabelmans (2022). On Broadway, Williams starred in revivals of the musical Cabaret in 2014 and the drama Blackbird in 2016, for which she received a nomination for the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play. She is an advocate for equal pay in the workplace. Consistently private about her personal life, Williams has a daughter from her relationship with actor Heath Ledger and was briefly married to musician Phil Elverum. She has two children with her second husband, theater director Thomas Kail. |
Movies
I'm Not There
smokingsides
Cate Blanchett smokes like a chimney throughout her gender-bending stint as a Bob Dylan-inspired character in this very strange movie. Her impression of Dylan is hit and miss, but she definitely studied his smoking mannerisms. Michelle Williams, as an Edie Sedgwick-inspired character, is seen briefly on the cover of a magazine dangling what appears to be a small cigar or brown cigarette. At one point, the cover becomes animated and she takes a nice drag and inhales slowly, then freezes back into position with cigarette dangling in her mouth. Definitely the smoking highlight of the movie, a must-see for Michelle Williams fans. Another unknown actress (Jennifer Rae Westley?) plays a girlfriend/groupie to Blanchett's character and has several decent smoking scenes. Overall, an abysmal movie but worth seeing for the smoking. |
If These Walls Could Talk 2
smokingsides
Williams smokes in several scenes, with a couple of good exhales. Receives a light from a very butch-looking Chloe Sevigny in one scene (Chloe doesn't smoke), and inhales and exhales while lying on a bed in another scene. Lyonne has a nice scene inhaling and exhaling on a couch, shot in profile view. Either Nia Long or Heather McComb also smoke in the movie. |
Land of Plenty
smokingsides
She smokes once in the first part of the movie, while chatting on the internet with her boyfriend. Takes about 3 drags, each followed by quite nice visible exhale. A little bit further in the movie, there is also a scene in which she is dancing on a roof, holding a cigarette (she also takes a drag at the end of the scene, but you can't see anything). |
Me Without You
smokingsides
WOW. The film spans three decades in the life of best friends Williams and Friel, from pre-teens in 1973 to late 30's in 2001 with stops in 1978,1982 and 1989. No shortage of great lightups, inhales, exhales, holds --- Williams holds with her toes in two scenes! Styler holds in nearly all of her scenes as Williams' mother and there is another young blonde who smokes in two scenes and a Spanish actress as well. Williams changes her look throughout the film from black bobbed punker to bleached blonde punker and back to the short black hair. A triumph! |
Prozac Nation
smokingsides
Christina smokes all-white Morleys (fictious brand made famous in the X-Files) in numerous scenes including an extremely nice light-up, exhale and two more drags in a restaurant. Michelle smokes both cigarettes and pot in a couple of scenes. Jessica also smokes cork-tips throughout including a decent mother-daughter scene with Christina. |
