Movies
Georgia
smokingsides
Just one scene in which she asks for a cigarette and lights it. |
smokingsides
As is usually the case in Jennifer's movies, she smokes incessantly but in relatively ordinary fashion; there are several very nice scenes in this one, however; one shot profile in a dark bar, the other shot against a black couch. |
Girls of the White Orchid
smokingsides
In Japan, where [Leigh] has been virtually kidnapped (suckered in by a phony modeling job and unfree to leave), she resigns herself to her fate, spots a cigarette pack in her room, and decides to light up. It's probably supposed to be the character's first cigarette, but it definitely was not JJL's first. |
Last Exit to Brooklyn
smokingsides
Many smoking scenes throughout the movie, several of them in a seductive context. Leigh demonstrates great style, with several excellent inhales and exhales, along with some great dangling. The smoke is very visible, and there are several scenes when she is talking straight into her man's face while smoking; too bad we can't smell smoky breath from film! Overall, a classic. |
Rag Tale
smokingsides
A drag early on for Leigh. Later a lightup, and near the end smokes a joint with a lightup and inhale. Stockbridge holds a cig in a restaurant and has a drag on a cigar. Shortly after, dangles unlit and holds in a bar. And finally a lightup. All pretty quick shots as the movie is annoyingly filmed in such a way that there are cuts or changes in camera angle practically every 1-2 seconds. |
Short Cuts
smokingsides
Jennifer: many scenes smoking either Marlboro Lights or pot. Lili Taylor: many scenes smoking cigarettes or pot. Lily Tomlin: one or two scenes. Julianne: 2 scenes. Madeleine: a few scenes and she even inhales a few drags. Frances: two good scenes. [Cusack] close to the end of the film riding bike in a park |
Skipped Parts
smokingsides
[Leigh] Smokes constantly about 12 times throughout the movie. Smokes at home, restaurants, bars, at the rodeo, while driving etc. Because of editing and filming conditions there are precious few exhales but there is an excellent one about at the 1:30 point. Definitely appears IRL like in most of her previous movies. |
The Hudsucker Proxy
smokingsides
Two scenes in which she removes a cigarette from a male reporter's mouth. In the first she takes a drag, though there is no clear exhale. In the second she talks with the cigarette in the corner of her mouth (brief drag). Two other lighting scenes - in one, a bonus whisp belatedly follows what appeared to be a completed exhale. |
