The Loveless
smokingsides
Extremely stylized and self-conscious -- nearly to the point of fetishism -- biker flick set in the 50s. Chock full of lovingly lit chrome, leather jackets, chains, boots, slick hair, and (naturally) endless shots of unfiltered Luckies being fired up with Zippos and smoked with exaggerated cool. Mostly by the guys, unfortunately, although L'Hotsky, Kanter, and a couple of unnamed actresses in small parts have their moments. The peroxide-blonde L'Hotsky is the lead biker-chick and the most glam looking, and tries to affect a sexy smoking style, but maddeningly, doesn't inhale. Kanter plays a rebellious local teen and smokes better in her two scenes but doesn't look as good, although your taste may differ on that. A diner waitress dangles a lot but never drags, and another woman takes a great lusty drag and exhale while stripping in a dive bar, but most of her face is just off the edge of the frame during her exhale. In sum, this could have been incredible, but mostly it just misses. |
