All three actresses play tough young high school girls (despite looking at least 20) in this gang action film. They're shown holding more often than dragging, but each looks IRL when she does take a drag. Lori Eastside has the best close-up, inhaling in a tough manner and exhaling a good amount of smoke. Wendy Barry is a bit more demure, in an '80s 'big hair' kind of way, and has one decent inhale and exhale in a medium shot. Gina Gershon takes a couple of drags and looks experienced, but these are wide shots, so it's hard to see much detail. |
Demonlover

High hopes attended this one, since the director earlier gave us the great Irma Vep and the alltime classic Late August, Early September. Unfortunately, however, in this one his style is all arty lighting, quick cutting, and nervous, jerky camera movement. There's PLENTY of smoking, but it could have been much better with a different directing style. The rundown: Nielsen has the most scenes scattered throughout, is shown lighting a few times and occasionally gives us a lusty, thick exhale. Gershon, very sexy, has one office scene with a lot of holding and a couple of quickly glimpsed, well-lit exhales, and later lights up in a dark hotel room. Sevigny's two scenes, both in cars, have lightups and a few drags/exhales but are mostly ruined by being shot through lots of window reflection. The middle-aged Reymond has one decent scene with a stylish lightup and some dangling. Yamazaki is shown to be young and gorgeous in two early nonsmoking scenes, but when she lights up and takes several drags in a later nightclub scene, the fancy lighting effects make both her face and the smoke mostly invisible. Bottom line: well worth seeing, but still frustrating. |
Guinevere
smokingsides
Smart has a pretty decent scene midway through the film, with a couple of good visible exhales. Then in an unexpected scene near the end, Oh, Gershon, and Guy have an extended scene sitting around a table, drinking, talking -- and smoking! It's a little chopped up in the editing, but each has one decent exhale, and those who remember her not inhaling in Harlem Nights will be pleased to know that in this one Jasmine handles her cigarette like a real smoker and that the smoke she blows out has clearly been inhaled. |
One Tough Cop
smokingsides
Just one scene, late in the film. Gershon lights up, seen from the next room, then turns and walks toward the camera. If she exhales it's invisible. Later in the scene, takes a drag while sitting on a bed, again filmed from a longer distance than one would like; then the director cuts to the next scene before she exhales. Disappointingly brief and poorly filmed, but what's there is pretty sexy, especially if you're into Gershon. |
