Take Gosford Park, set it in 1950s France and add music, and you've got this one, a holder-lover's dream movie. Ardant has about 6 scenes, Deneuve has 2, and Huppert has one, all with multiple drags/exhales and all with holders. Deneuve, as usual, releases a lot of smoke before inhaling, and Ardant has a similar style, unfortunately; in fact, with some of her drags it's hard to tell if she inhales at all. Ardant blows smoke into Virginie Ledoyen's face, and later Huppert exhales into Ardant's. Beart doesn't use a holder, takes several lusty drags in her one scene, and shows one good nostril exhale. She's also the only one of the four who's under 45, although don't let that stop you -- Deneuve and Ardant are still sex on wheels, and Huppert, a dowdy spinster for most of the film, glams up for her smoking scene. |
Au plus pr%s du paradis

Deneuve, who is ageing but still looks pretty good, smokes in about 10 scenes with her distinctive smoking style. The lighting is very good and ensures plenty of visible smoke. However, Deneuve's bizarre smoking style produces the smoke only during her version of a French inhale, and hardly any during the exhale. |
Belle de jour

[Deneuve] Nice smoking here. As the bored banker's wife transforms herself into a daytime prostitute, starting to smoke plays a part of it. She starts and becomes more and more comfortable with smoking during the movie. Well filmed inhales and exhales, but nothing outstanding. Also smoking by many other characters. After all its France in the 60s.. |
Chamade, La

The first two cigarette (as opposed to smoking) scenes make you crazy as Deneuve fiddles and fiddles with cigarettes, even touches them to her lips, but never lights them -- even tells a man to leave her alone when he offers her a light in the second such scene. A third scene has her walking on the street holding an unlit cig, and you think 'Here we go again.' This time, however, she accepts a light, then exhales quite visibly through her nostrils. A final scene has her lighting up indoors, with all-but-invisible smoke. Wouldn't be recommended if it weren't Deneuve... But it IS Deneuve, age 25, and about as beautiful as a woman could be. |
Conte de No%l, Un
smokingsides
Typically French, every woman in the cast smokes, including an uncredited attractive young woman playing a doctor! Deneuve and Mastroianni smoke in countless scenes throughout, Devos has two or three, Consigny just the briefest of glimpses holding. Mediocre lighting for the most part, with a few exceptions. |

Deneuve smokes in her usual style in several scenes at the beginning of the movie, before she dies. Golubeva only holds in one scene. Also, in the DVD release's extra footage, there's a scene where Deneuve is sitting on a motorbike smoking, talking with the film's director between takes. |
Sir%ne du Mississipi, La
smokingsides
One very pretty (though brief) scene where she's sitting in the front of a car. We see a full-face view as she lights and dangles. As usual though, she barely inhales, and exhales are not visible. In a couple of other scenes we see her mainly holding, though there is a hint of exhaled smoke at one point. She's stunningly beautiful in this movie, and even the holding scenes are exciting. |
The April Fools
smokingsides
In her first scene she descends a staircase during a large party at her apartment. A freshly lighted cigarette posed in her fingers. As she descends - she smokes and poses with her cigarette in an elegant style almost beyond comparision. She looks around the party. There are many other women and most are smoking. Beyond that there are many other fine scenes featuring her smoking. Besides that - it's a very good movie to boot. |
