Biography (TMDB): Joan Geraldine Bennett (February 27, 1910 – December 7, 1990) was an American stage, film and television actress. Besides acting on the stage, Bennett appeared in more than 70 motion pictures from the era of silent movies well into the sound era. She is possibly best-remembered for her film noir femme fatale roles in director Fritz Lang's movies such as The Woman in the Window (1944) and Scarlet Street (1945). Bennett had three distinct phases to her long and successful career, first as a winsome blonde ingenue, then as a sensuous brunette femme fatale (with looks that movie magazines often compared to those of Hedy Lamarr), and finally as a warmhearted wife/mother figure. In 1951, Bennett's screen career was marred by scandal after her third husband, film producer Walter Wanger, shot and injured her agent Jennings Lang. Wanger suspected that Lang and Bennett were having an affair, a charge which she adamantly denied. In the 1960s, she achieved success for her portrayal of Elizabeth Collins Stoddard on TV's Dark Shadows, for which she received an Emmy nomination. For her final movie role, as Madame Blanc in Suspiria (1977), she received a Saturn Award nomination. Profile Picture
Movies
Colonel Effingham's Raid
smokingsides
She takes out a cigarette and places it between her lips right at the end of one scene. In another, she takes a single drag.
Hollow Triumph
smokingsides
Is seen smoking in 3 scenes
Man Hunt
smokingsides
One scene. She discards the cigarette she is holding, but within two minutes she takes out another, taps it on her pack, lights it with a match, and emits a thick feather of smoke.
Scarlet Street
smokingsides
Smokes throughout - some excellent exhales
Secret Beyond the Door...
smokingsides
Includes a closeup of her pensively dangling a nonfilter for about a half min before she lights with car lighter
The House Across the Bay
smokingsides
[Bennett] doesn't start smoking until a little while into the movie, but after that she has several scenes, including a couple wearing black gloves.
The Man I Married
smokingsides
As was customary at the time, much of Joan's smoke is expelled without inhalation. There are two scenes, both with a lighting. In the first, there are four drags with very shallow inhales. The second is better as smoke clings to her words as she speaks. There is also a nasal exhale.
The Reckless Moment
smokingsides
Seven scenes with five lightings. Joan's earlier efforts were unimpressive, but she certainly knew how to smoke when she made this one. There is a nice twin-jet nasal exhale and three talk-exhales, though they could have been better filmed. She chain-lights one cigarette from another in a car.
The Woman in the Window
smokingsides
Smokes through a white holder in five scenes. It's very stylish as she releases some of her smoke uninhaled, then breathes in the rest and talk- exhales.
The Woman on the Beach
smokingsides
Smokes throughout the whole movie. A basic all around performance: lightups, exhales, talking exhales. She didn't look as glamorous as she usually does, but she still looked good.
Trade Winds
smokingsides
An unidentified woman asks for a cigarette and dangles as she waits in vain for a light. Everyone is engrossed as Bennett plays Chopin, then rejects the offer of a cigarette, preferring her own specially-imported Egyptian brand, which all the men are keen to light for her. In a later scene she is seen to take a drag, but blows most of the smoke out without inhaling.
