Biography (TMDB): | Berit Elisabet Andersson (11 November 1935 – 14 April 2019) or better known professionally as Bibi Andersson (Swedish: [ˈbɪ̂bːɪ ˈânːdɛˌʂɔn]), was a Swedish actress who was best known for her frequent collaborations with filmmaker Ingmar Bergman Her artistic dreams came early in life and were further supported by her older sister Gerd Andersson who became a ballet dancer at the Royal Opera and made her acting debut in 1951. Bibi, on the other side, had to make do with bit parts and commercials. She debuted in Dum-Bom (1953), playing against Nils Poppe. Eventually, she was able to start at the Royal Dramatic Theatre's acting school in 1954. A brief relationship with Ingmar Bergman made her quit school and follow him to the Malmö city theatre, where he was a director, performing in plays by August Strindberg and Hjalmar Bergman. Bergman also gave her a small part in his comedy Smiles of a Summer Night (1955), and larger roles in his Wild Strawberries (1957) and The Seventh Seal (1957). From the the 1960s she got offers from abroad, with best result in I Never Promised You a Rose Garden (1977). During the civil war in Yugoslavia she has worked with several initiatives to give the people of Sarajevo theatre and other forms of culture. IMDb Mini Biography By: Mattias Thuresson |

smokingsides
Andersson has 4 continuous scenes early on, comprising about 30 minutes of screen time, during which she smokes Marlboro Reds virtually nonstop, four or five separate cigarettes. Looks great lighting and holding, takes many drags, and shows a few good exhales, including one great nostril exhale and a few talked out. Lindblom has one scene; her character says she quit six days ago and is dying for a cigarette. A guy holds an open pack of Marlboro Reds about three inches in front of her nose and practically demands she take one. She does, accepts a light, takes a deep drag and inhale, then tilts her head back and sighs 'Ah, that's heaven' before exhaling through her nostrils against a perfect black background. Also takes another drag and exhales before later putting it out. (Review refers to original 299-minute version shown on Swedish TV, later edited down to 167 minutes for theatrical release, both versions included in Criterion DVD set, but I didn't watch the shorter version.) |

Twenty-ish Dumas hand-rolls a cigarette for 40-ish Andersson and gives her a light, then does the same for herself. That's all for Andersson, but Dumas continues to smoke hand-rolled for the rest of the film, probably five or six good scenes in all, including one in bed with Andersson. Well worth renting if you spot it. |
