7 Women
smokingsides
She plays a hard-smoking doctor with attitude at a Christian mission under siege in China and takes great delight in annoying the ladies who run the mission by smoking in their presence despite requests not to do so. There's a great first scene where she comes in to dinner with a cigarette dangling from her lips and, noting the disapproving glances, takes a deep drag, savouring it with her tongue before exhaling coolly with exaggerated pleasure. She stubs out her cigarette temporarily for grace, but manages to rekindle it from its embers as soon as it is over. She lights up a second time in the same scene. There are another 11 scenes with half-a-dozen lightings. She usually dangles her cigarette from the corner of mouth before she lights it and then inhales the first drag without removing it from her mouth. Great non-filtered stuff - and it's good to see a heavy smoker as the 'good guy' for a change!
84 Charing Cross Road
smokingsides
Bancroft only holds, another actress has a mouth exhale
Agnes of God
smokingsides
Mature women share smokes in several scenes. They share cigarettes in several scenes, but the style is very 'mature' For those who like unremarkable smoking.
Gorilla at Large
smokingsides
This was when she was quite young and looked great - 2 scenes - both good
Great Expectations
smokingsides
in the trailer [Paltrow] appears to have an extremely well-lit exhale scene.
Home for the Holidays
smokingsides
stars Holly Hunter and Robert Downey Jr., playing sister and brother, indulge in cozy small talk while sharing a cigarette, puffing and swapping it. It's a nice, intimate -- and very empty -- scene because you have no idea what they're talking about. You become hypnotized by that cigarette going back and forth, back and forth, to the point of blocking out their dialogue. Earlier in the film, you notice that Anne Bancroft, playing their mother, does all of her initial scenes with a cigarette dangling off her lip, in both lighted and unlighted states.
How to Make an American Quilt
smokingsides
This was the only decent offering of a very bad month. Alfre Woodard stars, with several outstanding long drags and slow exhales; there are a couple of other decent shots from others in this flick, including Winona Ryder, but Alfre is clearly the standout.
Lipstick
smokingsides
I was very dissapointed! Anne only has one smoking scene. She grabs [a cigarette] from a box on her desk, then holds it un-lit for a while. Then she lights it up, and takes a long drag but the camera cuts away before she exhales :(
New York Confidential
smokingsides
An early holding scene for Anne Bancroft and at 1:10 Marilyn Maxwell has one drag and exhale but does not inhale. By far the best scene is at :39 when Anne Bancroft receives a light from Richard Conte, has a nice drag/inhale from the light with nice exhale.
The Graduate
smokingsides
Anne Bancroft reveals her blackstocking thighs while lighting up a cigarette. Another funny scene is where she takes a deep drag off her cigarette only to have Dustin Hoffman plant a furious kiss on her lips that goes on for sometime. As soon as he breaks off the kiss she gives the exhale of all-time and almost passes out from lack of Oxygen.
The Hindenburg
smokingsides
Three scenes smoking drugs through a pipe, inhaling twice in each with open mouth.
The Pumpkin Eater
smokingsides
Bancroft has a couple of decent exhales about half way through, and later on smokes lying on a bed, but it's nothing special.
The Turning Point
smokingsides
[Sibley] accepts a light backstage
Up at the Villa

[Thomas] Just one night scene in a walled garden in this film set in 1938. First is a lightup from a distance from which the editor cuts away before it's completed. Then we see her emerging through the door to the outside, dragging. She exhales as she stubs the cig out with her foot, and that's it for the rest of the film. Damn.
